  • Come away with me

    - 13.29

Come Away With Me blends elements of jazz, soul, country, and folk-pop in a warm, unselfconscious amalgam, and erases musical boundaries in the process. Norah Jones, on vocals, piano and Wurlitzer electric piano, is backed seamlessly by a skilled supporting cast. The adroit and understated production is by Arif Mardin, the veteran producer/arranger of landmark recordings by Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Laura Nyro, Roberta Flack, and Willie Nelson, to name a few.STUDIO NOTES: The record is comprised of material recorded in May 2001 with producer Craig Street, and in August 2001 with producer Arif Mardin. Reflecting on the studio sessions Norah says, I feel like this record is a pretty full expression of where I am now. It's music of mine, and many of my friends. Also some jazz standards and covers. The environnment was great. I felt very comfortable with all the musicians. It was a real collaborative effort. It felt like we were making a record in my living room. Most of it was recorded pretty much live, with extra guitar and voice overdubs here and there. I don't know if it can be classified as jazz really, or pop music. Hopefully it can be appreciated by fans of both. It has lots of different elements. In the end though, it's all about the songs. I think they're all very strong songs. I'm very lucky to have friends who are great songwriters. The originals ended up being the bulk of the album. A few of them are mine, but Jesse and Lee contributed greatly as well.

  • Mannheim steamroller-xmas angel

    - 10.99

A family story depicted on ice with music by Mannheim Steamroller, Christmas Angel was first broadcast on NBC in December of 1998, and is, perhaps, the most extravagant ice skating spectacular ever made. It is a classic tale of good triumphing over evil, told in an enchanting way with ice skaters portraying the characters, as a decorative angel is stolen from atop the village Christmas tree by an evil gorgon on Christmas Eve. The presents come to life to rescue the angel and turn the gorgon to good. Once the angel is rescued and placed back atop the tree, Christmas is once again restored. The production stars Dorothy Hamill, Elvis Stojko, Tonia Kwiatkowski, Rudy Galindo and a cast of thirteen national and international Olympic and World Champion ice skaters. With ice skating choreography by the incomparable Randy Gardner, and including the talents of the renowned British film director Andy Picheta (Lord of the Dance) this is truly a world-class skating spectacular. The story is narrated by Grammy award-winning composer and arranger Chip Davis and superstar Olivia Newton-John. The music from Mannheim Steamroller features selections from their three multi-platinum Christmas recordings as well as additional tracks.

  • Hendrix j-rainbow bridge

    - 12.99

Available on video for the first time, Rainbow Bridge, the controversial 1971 cult classic, is now completely restored and here in it s original 125-minute length. Often mistaken as a Jimi Hendrix concert, Rainbow Bridge is actually a dizzying mix of counterculture lifestyles and politics set in Hawaii 1970. Directed by Chuck Wein, Rainbow Bridge tracks the journey of actress Pat Hartley across the Pacific to Maui, Hartley is immediately welcomed by a group of young people determined to establish a new alternative community. While the film s soundtrack is filled throughout with such classic Hendrix studio recordings as Pali Gap and Dolly Dagger, the centerpiece of Rainbow Bridge remains the 17 minutes of Hendrix s July 1970 concert atop Haleakala Volcano in Maui, Hawaii. Accompanied by the film s cast and crew, Hartley is treated to a private performance by the legendary guitarist. Hendrix is joined by bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell and delivers high-voltage renditions of Foxy Lady, Hey Baby/In From The Storm, as well as exciting excerpts of Hear My Train A Comin , Purple Haze, and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).

  • Border lord/jesus was a capricorn

    - 17.99

While it's true that 1972's BORDER LORD and JESUS WAS A CAPRICORN, Kristofferson's third and fourth albums for Monument, respectively, aren't as widely celebrated as his first two--on which he had the luxury of picking over his finest songs written over a long period of trying to make it in Nashville--they are nonetheless consistent in terms of quality and vision. Astonishingly, Kristofferson cut and released these two sets within nine months of one another, making for a total of four albums in less than three years! Needless to say, there was little time to painstakingly craft these newer songs as he had his earlier ones, so he went to the suitcase: some of the songs on BORDER LORD date back to the '60s.BORDER LORD reflects on three subjects extensively: broken characters (mainly women), God, and the Devil. They are intertwined seamlessly here, creating a themed album, though not quite a "concept" as a result. These are the reflections of a man who travels, whose life on the road brings him into contact with big questions, conflicting inner forces, and with people on the fringes. The best songs here, such as "Burden of Freedom," "Josie," and "Getting' By, High and Strange" are as poetic as anything the man ever wrote, and while the narratives are a little more sporadic and less catchy as the songs on his first two recordings, they delve deeper into the seamy side of life more naturally and with more memorable lines. It's solid, top to bottom.JESUS WAS A CAPRICORN featured the largest alternating cast of studio musicians and singers Kristofferson ever recorded with: a dozen guitar players, three different singing quartets, his own unruly cast of backing vocalists, a full string section, five keyboard players, etc. The disc features a pair of duets with his soon-to-be-wife Rita Coolidge, the excellent "Give It Time to Be Tender," and "It Sure Was (Love)." The set was Kristofferson's greatest commercial success, though it was a sleeper album if there ever was one--it hit number one on the country charts a full year after it was released.

  • Cosi fan tutte

    - 37.99

Modern listeners have come to expect perfection from Mozart's music: exquisite constructions, tuneful melodies, unblemished performances suitable for building baby's brain, setting life to music, or whatever other marketing ploys come along. Yet the rewards for looking beyond all that and discovering period-instrument Mozart are great. The instrumental sound here may not be as tidy as in other recordings, but the approximation of what Mozart himself might have heard is fascinating. In Jean-Claude Malgoire's performance, 'Cos? fan tutte' sounds less like a museum piece and more like a work with some vitality. Not that it's not a lively and well-loved work in performances which have all the edges smoothed out, but Malgoire and company have captured the opera's essence by virtue of both their instruments and their approach. Performing 'Cos?' on stage at the Th??tre des Champs-Elys?es before this recording gave the ensemble the opportunity to know the opera as a dramatic work rather than merely a musical one, an understanding which carries even on disc. Any weak link in so small an ensemble could easily ruin the whole, but Malgoire's performers are well-matched and his all-French cast shines as brightly as any group of international stars.

  • Orpheus in the underworld (1858 version)

    - 32.99

'Orph?e aux Enfers' exists in two versions. Marc Minkowski opts for the earlier edition of 1858 in four scenes with selected additions from the grander revision of 1874. Fans of the ballet 'Ga?t? Parisienne,' arranged by Emanuel Rosenthal from a variety of Offenbach sources, will find much that is familiar here, including the famous can-can which, surprisingly enough, is a chorus. The recording is based on a production that toured a variety of opera houses in 1997 and the extensive stage experience shows at every turn. Minkowski's cast boasts many of the finest voices now active in French opera. They also turn out to be inspired comedians. The brilliant soprano Natalie Dessay as Eurydice, and the formidable contralto Ewa Podles as that embodiment of decorum, Public Opinion, are only are only a small part of inspired casting from top to bottom. A special delight is the star turn by the hysterically funny Jennifer Smith, who has graced many of Minkowski's other recordings, as a highly un-virginal Diana. The extensive dialogue is delivered with the same relish as the music in a theatrical treat for any lover of Offenbach's enchanting score.

  • Piano concertos

    - 11.99

A classic from EMI's vaults: the legendary Samson Fran?ois' brilliant renditions of key works by Ravel, conducted by one of the preeminent Ravel conductors of the century, Andre Cluytens. The opening movement of the Piano Concerto in G can best be described as beautiful noise, a raucous whirlwind of orchestration and a pyrotechnic piano part that incorporates Ravel's love of jazz. The central Adagio assai, dominated by a gently rocking piano line, serves as a leisurely reprieve before the final Presto which revisits the temperament of the opening movement. The Concerto for Left Hand is a no less brilliant work but one with a darker cast: it opens with some subterranean murmurings from the wind section which soon gives way to a sun-burst blast of the full orchestra. Fran?ois' decisive and declamatory entry sets the tone for this short but rich and serious work. Ravel's solo piano masterpiece, 'Gaspard de la nuit,' is given a somewhat reserved reading by Fran?ois who seems to be more intrigued more by the work's ruminative aspects than by its skittery and glittering surface. A fascinating reading and one that deserves a special status amidst the many recordings of this 20th century classic.
