When it comes to a genre as stylistically specific as pop-punk, bands generally aren't expected to progress much beyond the standard mix of raging guitars, speedy drumming, and high-pitched melodic vocals singing paeans to teen rebellion. With 2004's THE CHRONICLES OF LIFE AND DEATH, however, Good Charlotte confounds expectations by delivering a sprawling concept album that borrows from a variety of distinctly non-punk music. Opening with a spooky, orchestral piece that sounds like a mix of John Williams and Arvo Part, the disc races from Cheap Trick-esque power pop (the title track) to shoegazer-y angst-rock ("In This World [Murder]") to Rufus Wainright-like sensitive piano ballads ("The Truth"). On "I Just Wanna Live," the group even tries its hand at rap, rhyming over a groove that's half Snoop Dogg/half Happy Mondays. For all its seeming incongruity, however, the record never sounds messy, but rather emerges as the work of a band eager to expand the boundaries of both its chosen style and its own musicality. (Note: There are two versions of the album, each containing a different bonus track.)

Linda (Amy Brentano) gets her boyfriend Russ (Dan Erickson) to rig up the old brothel with spooky gags for a treasure hunt. That night, Linda takes a group of pledges to the house, which is actually haunted by the hookers' ghosts and a transvestite slasher who turns out to be the now-grown murderous kid from the prologue. There are no deaths for an hour, then viewers are treated to a strangulation by garter, a co-ed nailed into a coffin, a double-shooting, a hanging, a tumble down some stairs and a fairly brutal stabbing. Most will figure out who the killer is within five minutes and wait an hour more to see him do his thing in a puffy white dress and high-heels. Needless to say, Findlay has learned nothing from her two decades behind a camera and delivers one of the most tedious, nonsensical slasher films made during the 1980s glut. There are visible microphones, bad editing, horrid acting, and pathetically weak dialogue. Findlay is largely to blame for all of these flaws, as she photographed, co-edited, directed and wrote this awful mess which is strictly for completists only. In the film, several luminaries discuss Dick's impact on society and how it affected popular art, such as Robert Anton Wilson, author of the Illuminati trilogy, and Paul Williams, who profiled the author in a 1974 Rolling Stone article that was a catalyst for his elevation amongst fans. Considered an underground writer, Dick built a steady fan base of devout readers and ardent admirers. Just before his period of recognizable fame, the author (portrayed here as a recreational drug user) was burgled and his private safe was blown open with explosives; the vault was later widely believed to be stashed with heroin, with the heist possibly masterminded by a young addict -- who could have been among the group of young people Dick frequently harbored in the early 1970s. Dick also attempted suicide, and firmly believed the "Xerox missive" (a letter) would contribute to his death. At the end of his career, the author was plagued by visions that all but forced him to give up on his "Exegesis," a tome equaling roughly over 10,000 pages that detailed his ruminations on the meaning of life. Geldzahler was a collector and historian who helped establish the role of artists such as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, George Segal, and Roy Lichtenstein within the canon of contemporary art with "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970," a groundbreaking show at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art which made the case for pop art while the gallery establishment was still favoring the more accepted but less accessible abstract expressionists. A passionate man who was a friend, confidante, and collaborator to many of the painters and sculptors he championed, Geldzahler assembled the "New York Painting and Sculpture" show himself, and while it caused no small amount of controversy at the time (especially among his colleagues at the MoMA), it established a consensus that the pop movement and its leading figures were here to stay, and Geldzahler continued to be a mover and shaker in the world of contemporary art until his death in 1994 at the age of 59.
