  • Chronicles of life & death [import]

    - 24.99

When it comes to a genre as stylistically specific as pop-punk, bands generally aren't expected to progress much beyond the standard mix of raging guitars, speedy drumming, and high-pitched melodic vocals singing paeans to teen rebellion. With 2004's THE CHRONICLES OF LIFE AND DEATH, however, Good Charlotte confounds expectations by delivering a sprawling concept album that borrows from a variety of distinctly non-punk music. Opening with a spooky, orchestral piece that sounds like a mix of John Williams and Arvo Part, the disc races from Cheap Trick-esque power pop (the title track) to shoegazer-y angst-rock ("In This World [Murder]") to Rufus Wainright-like sensitive piano ballads ("The Truth"). On "I Just Wanna Live," the group even tries its hand at rap, rhyming over a groove that's half Snoop Dogg/half Happy Mondays. For all its seeming incongruity, however, the record never sounds messy, but rather emerges as the work of a band eager to expand the boundaries of both its chosen style and its own musicality. (Note: There are two versions of the album, each containing a different bonus track.)

Pink deserves a lot of credit for overturning everyone's expectations. After emerging in 2000 with a debut full of club-ready, R&B-influenced dance-pop, she moved on to genre-hopping hybrids (MISSUNDAZTOOD) and punk-inflected rock (TRY THIS). 2006's I'M NOT DEAD resumes Pink's game of stylistic hopscotch, as she skitters skillfully from arena rock to hip-hop-influenced jams to thoughtful folk to well-crafted pop.Remarkably, these genre experiments work well together, and stand as a testament to Pink's unwillingness to fit into any music industry mold. Whether collaborating with the Indigo Girls on the acoustic protest song "Dear Mr. President," showing off her irresistible swagger on the electro-groove-driven "'Cuz I Can," or generating soaring pop-rock on "Runaway," I'M NOT DEAD gives listeners plenty to chew on, and the results are as tasty as they are surprising.

Stiff Little Fingers: Jake Burns, Ali McMordie, Henry Cluney, Brian Faloon.Includes liner notes by Gordon Ogilvie. In their late '70s/early '80s heyday, Stiff Little Fingers were among the most clever and ferocious purveyors of melodic, message-oriented punk rock around. Combining teenage angst with a guttural rage at the British presence in Northern Ireland, they managed to put out several classically raw platters before their inevitable implosion (and eventual reunions with progressively fewer members, but that's another story).ALL THE BEST is a two-disc set that captures the choicest material from their first three indispensable records, plus some rarities and live tracks to boot. For those fans so parochial as to think that Irish music is exclusively of the Clancy Brothers and Chieftains variety, "Suspect Device" and "Nobody's Hero" will be a pleasant wake-up call. Also included are essential gems such as "Alternative Ulster," "Just Go For It," and even a live version of "White Christmas." ALL THE BEST is an excellent introduction to one of the best political punk bands of all time.

  • Lust for live 1977 [import]

    - 17.99

Personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals); Carlos Alomar, Ricky Gardiner (guitar); David Bowie (piano); Tony Sales (bass); Hunt Sales (drums).Recorded at Hansa Tonstusios, Berlin, Germany.Iggy and Bowie at the height of their respective powers presented a formidable artistic engine, and Lust For Life sees them working up a full head of steam. Two songs will need little introduction - 'Lust For Life' and 'The Passenger' are as intrinsic to the tapestry of 70s rock music as sundry Beatles efforts were to the previous decade (their influence on 90s film soundtracks is a testament to their durability). Those monolithic jukebox favourites aside, listeners may also find space in their hearts for the swaggering 'Neighbourhood Threat' (shades of the Stooges, without the musical clatter) and the disquieting 'Turn Blue', written from the viewpoint of an overdosing junkie.

  • Face to face [import]

    - 24.99

FACE TO FACE contains two previously unreleased alternate takes.Personnel: Baby Face Willette (organ); Fred Jackson (tenor saxophone); Grant Green (guitar); Ben Dixin (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.Organist Roosevelt "Baby Face" Willette is both a shadowy figure and something of a legend in the 1960s jazz scene. While he played with Blue Note heavyweights Grant Green and Lou Donaldson, he had drifted into obscurity by the '70s. But while on the scene, Willette made some fine music in the soul-jazz vein, and FACE TO FACE (1961) was his debut. Willette's Jimmy Smith-inspired organ pilots a combo of Fred Jackson's tenor and the aforementioned Green's ace guitar through some earnest, tasty, blues-tinged grooves. While it's no masterpiece, fans of soul-jazz should snap up FACE TO FACE while they can.

  • Tender feelin's [import]

Duke Pearson's lengthy career includes several highlights, as a pianist, producer, arranger, and composer. His contributions can be heard on many a Blue Note album although 1959's TENDER FEELIN'S was just his second LP for the label. In this case, Pearson's playing lives up to the title; in fact, this could be subtitled "Music For Lovers." Accompanied only by bass and drums, this set has a timelessly relaxed and comforting vibe throughout. Later in the 1960s, Pearson would get funky, but TENDER captures him when he was simply a jazz pianist, playing lyrically and romantically.

Mississippi born Riley B. King began playing music on the streets of his native Indianola in the '40s, eventually moving to Memphis to pursue a career as a bluesman. He found a home as a DJ on legendary Memphis radio Station WDIA in the early '50s, a position he used to further his budding reputation as a guitarist/singer to be reckoned with. His on-air moniker, "the Beale Street Blues Boy" ultimately metamorphosed into his stage name. He spent the '50s cementing his legend as an energetic performer, playing with Johnny Ace and Bobby "Blue" Bland and on his own. His very modern, urban style was influenced not only by T-Bone Walker, but by jazz guitarist Charlie Christian. King's gestalt was miles away from the blues' rural beginnings, relying on witty, sophisticated lyrics and almost jazzy rhythms. His signature guitar style, as played on his trademark Gibson hollow-body "Lucille," combined quick vibrato with cutting, single-note lines and aggressively bent notes. His boisterous vocals, entertainment-value showmanship and gregarious personality made him beloved not just to blues aficionados, but to the larger pop audience.

Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Sahib Shihab, Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Nelson Boyd, Al McKibbon (bass); Art Blakey, Max Roach (drums).Producer: Alfred Lion.Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.Recorded at WOR Studios, New York, New York on July 23, 1951 and May 30, 1952. Originally released on Bluenote (1511). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. The music of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk has always inspired profound devotion amongst the hippest fans and musicians. Swing ear stars such as Coleman Hawkins and Cootie Williams were among his earliest and most vocal admirers, while Monk's influence on Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane (among others) was profound. As a result, his remarkable body of written work and recordings form an aesthetic cornerstone of modern jazz. And yet, because of the challenging nature of his music, his fabled personal eccentricities, and some trumped-up criminal charges which cost him his cabaret card (essentially denying him the opportunity to perform in any New York City establishment serving liquor, between 1951 and '57), recognition and success were a long time coming for this American original. The works contained on GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC, VOL. 2 are some of the most remarkable performances and compositions in the history of American music, featuring some of Monk's greatest collaborations. With its bluesy outline, classic rhythmic breaks and superb melodic contours, "Straight No Chaser" has been a jazz standard since Monk first introduced it with this recording. Art Blakey's animated 12-bar intro sets a perfect tempo with an implied triplet feeling, as Monk's solo proceeds directly from Al McKibbon's sturdy two-beat pulse and the drummer's polyrhythmic proddings. Monk's laid-back groove belies the fierce tension his rhythmic gamesmanship, percussive dissonances, pregnant pauses, horn-like phrases and bluesy bent tones impart. All Monk tunes are full of teasing interactive themes and startling structural contrasts. As an accompanist, Monk doesn't simply feed vibraphone soloist Milt Jackson chordal backgrounds on the jagged "Criss Cross"--he enunciates a secondary theme of orchestral gravity. And few musicians are willing or able to take on the daunting melodic and rhythmic challenges of such abstract sculptures as the zig-zagging "Four In One," the skittering "Skippy," and the convoluted "Hornin' In" and "Sixteen."

The Scissor Sisters' self-titled 2004 debut proved the band to be postmodern recombinant wizards of the first order, mixing the hookiest elements of pop history with tongues planted firmly in cheeks. The group's sophomore effort, TA-DAH, builds on many of those same references, including flashy glitter-ball disco, accessible 1970s AM pop, glam rock, and almost any artist who has crafted dramatic, danceable jams with a knowing wink. When not mining familiar vibes from the Bee Gees ("I Don't Feel Like Dancin'") and Elton John ("She's My Man"), the Scissor Sisters reference Blondie ("Kiss You Off"), Paul McCartney (the music hall-esque "I Can't Decide"), and Stevie Wonder (on the funky tune titled, ironically, "Paul McCartney"), among others. But it's the way the Sisters throw these elements together that lifts them above jokiness and into the realm of pure, celebratory fun. And it's this--along with the album's sharp sense of craft-- that makes it superior to its predecessor.

Personnel includes: Ian Hunter (vocals), Cornell Dupree, Gerry Weems (guitars), Dominic Cortese (accordion), David Sanborn (saxophone), Arnie Lawrence (trumpet), Dave Bargeron (trombone), Lew Soloff (trumpet), Chris Stainton (keyboards, bass), Jaco Pastorius (bass, guitar), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), Don Alias (percussion), Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Ann E. Suton, Erin Dickens, Gail Kantor, Bob Segarini (background vocals). Two years removed from Mott the Hoople, and hot on the heels of a popular solo debut and the rousing British hit single "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," Ian Hunter abruptly switched gears for the lighter, more jazzified ALL AMERICAN ALIEN BOY. The move was surely partially in reaction to the sudden departure of his frequent collaborator, guitarist Mick Ronson; however, the music within gives away an artist confidently exploring new and fertile fields. The standout track, and unsurprisingly still a live showstopper decades later, is "Irene Wilde," a soaring anthem about childhood dreams of limitlessness: it's a well-trodden path, Hunter nonetheless imbues the song with such earnest majesty it feels new.
