Join the dots: b-sides & rarities 1978-2001- 39.99Wisely, The Cure decided to start fresh upon signing with their new label by cleaning house, remastering the old albums and bringing their fans this 4-Disc set, Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001. Not only is it the ultimate companion to the official releases, but it is, in a way, the new-super-deluxe-updated version of that cassette release of Staring at the Sea. Every B-side, in order, with cleaned up sound, liner notes, and explanations by the man who made it all happen.Compiled and produced by Robert Smith, this four-disc set gathers 70 rare treasures: recordings available only on radio samplers, promo releases, 12 dance singles, soundtracks, and other sources -- as well as 10 tracks never before released. A deluxe 76-page booklet features track-by-track commentary by Robert Smith and Simon Gallup, plus scores of photos, including many from Smith's private collection. Originally a postpunk outfit with gothic leanings, The Cure evolved into one of the most creatively satisfying groups to come of age in the 1980s. From dark dirges to dreamy pop, the music of their first two decades is adventurous, hypnotic, and rich with texture. Formed in 1976 by Robert Smith and schoolmates Michael Dempsey (bass) and Laurence Tolhurst (drums), the band was signed by Fiction Records on the strength of a demo recording of Killing An Arab. By 1989, the year they released their stateside breakthrough, Disintegration, The Cure were playing stadium tours on both sides of the Atlantic. The intervening years witnessed such underground milestones as Boys Don't Cry, Close To Me, and Just Like Heaven. |
