  • Essential paul simon

    - 17.99

Are 36 songs enough to truly encompass the essential items in the catalog of a master craftsman like Paul Simon? Probably not, but it's a healthy dose, and a damned fine anthology regardless. Roughly chronological in sequence, THE ESSENTIAL PAUL SIMON focuses exclusively on the folk-rock hero's post-Garfunkel days, and follows his maturation as a songwriter and record-maker. In retrospect, it quickly becomes apparent that the cross-genre concoctions of his celebrated 1986 album, GRACELAND, had been part of his modus operandi all along: see the reggae lilt of Mother and Child Reunion, the salsa flavor of Late in the Evening, and the gospel glow of Loves Me Like a Rock. Whatever the musical mode, every song on this satisfying collection is powered by Simon's rocket-science harmonic know-how and vivid poetic imagery, making this a powerful musical snapshot of an artist constantly in motion.

  • Green pastures

    - 12.99

You gotta git your minds fixed, the rural preacher tells Sunday School children. And the best way to do that fixin' is from Old Testament stories narrated by the preacher, played by a black cast, backed by the joyful gospel sounds of the Hall Johnson Choir and based on Marc Connelly's folk-themed Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Rex Ingram portrays de Lawd, who has a 100,000 things to do before any human's next breath - like instructing Noah (Eddie Anderson); taking counsel with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; or teaching Moses tricks to dazzle Pharaoh. Get your mind fixed for The Green Pastures. It's a film of its time. But like all great art, it transcends it.Running Time: 93 min.Format: DVD MOVIE

  • Colorblind

    - 10.99

On his second studio outing, Robert Randolph leads his Family Band through a typically energetic set. Although it features guest appearances by Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and R&B vocalist Leela James, COLORBLIND is clearly Randolph's show from start to finish, with his passionate voice and searing steel-guitar work at the fore throughout this assured set. Randolph deftly mixes funk, soul, and rock, and gives the latter style unexpected prominence on fierce tracks such as the stomping Thrill of It and Homecoming, a gospel-tinged song that is marked by slightly ominous six-string riffs and blistering solos. For those seeking evidence of Randolph's sterling reputation, COLORBLIND provides 11 strong examples. Track Listing 1. Ain't Nothing Wrong With That 2. Deliver Me 3. Diane 4. Angels 5. Jesus Is Just Alright - (with Eric Clapton) 6. Stronger - (with Leela James) 7. Thrill Of It 8. Blessed 9. Love Is The Only Way In - (with Dave Matthews/Leroi Moore/Rashawn Ross) 10. Matchbox Twenty: Rob Thomas (vocals, piano); Paul Doucette (acoustic & electric guitar, piano, Clavinet, Mellotron, drums, percussion); Kyle Cook, Adam Gaynor (guitar, background vocals); Brain Yale (bass).Additional personnel includes: Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Carol Webb, Enrico Dicecco, Jonathan Minklage, Maura Giannini, Jan Mullen, Ricky Sortomme, Bonna Tecco (violin); Sue Pray, Sarah Adams, Crystal Garner, Vincent Lionti (viola); Eric Ralshe, Jerome Ashby (French horn); Paul Doucette (synthesizer); Matt Serletic (congas); Vanesse Thomas, Lydia Mann-Jaime, Melanie Daniels, Cheryl Pepsi Riley (background vocals).Recorded at Bearsville Studio, Woodstock, New York and The Hit Factory, New York, New York.MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Unwell" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.Japanese edition features one bonus track. In between his commitments to the band, Matchbox Twenty singer-songwriter Rob Thomas had spent the time leading up to the group's third album collaborating with everyone from Willie Nelson to Mick Jagger (his resuscitation of Carlos Santana's career already being old news by this point). Despite all these star turns, Thomas returned dutifully to the fold, and MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE definitely sounds like a band effort, not just Rob-and-the-other-guys.While the catchy "Disease" (no pun intended) occasionally comes a little too close to Carly Simon's "You Belong to Me" for comfort, its musical insistence and inventive production make it stick in the memory. "Bright Lights," with it's piano-laden elegiac feel, is somewhat akin to the Train hit "Drops of Jupiter." "Downfall" starts out like a rowdy piece of alt-rock, but eventually drops into a surprising gospel feel, complete with choir. Like the opening track "Feel," "You're So Real" is a hard-charging rocker full of nasty riffs, but it's followed by album-closer (not counting a subsequent hidden track) "The Difference," a power-ballad that's the closest thing on the album to what longtime fans might have been expecting from their mercurial heroes.

Includes liner notes by Kirk Whalum.THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ CHAPTER 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.Flanked by an impressive cadre of musicians and gospel vocalists, saxophonist Kirk Whalum offers an extended jazz paean to Jesus in this follow up to 1998's CHAPTER I of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ. Recorded before a live audience in a cathedral in Los Angeles, Whalum's concert has the feel of a contemporary religious service, with applause and shouts from the audience. The numerous vocal spots ("El Todopoderoso" by Tata Vega; "Falling in Love With Jesus" by Jonathan Butler) give the impression of personal testimony. The music sustains Whalum's reputation as a master of the crossover jazz sound; he streamlines the idiom into a palatable amalgam of traditional jazz, urban R&B, groove-based motifs, world rhythms, soft, lyrical passages, and down-home gospel. Electric guitars, synthesizers, and vocals ensure that pop fans won't feel alienated, while Whalum's gentle tenor lines are unassailable in their technical expertise. A performance that succeeds as both a musical and Christian event, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ CHAPTER II is solid fare for the hungry of ear and spirit.
